Today marks 50 days until my due date. This being our first child, everything has been new and exciting and just a little surreal. But these days it’s truly starting to feel real
and my nesting instinct has gone into overdrive!

I feel like I am back in school. I have been reading book after book about childbirth and baby and breastfeeding. Even my husband has gotten on board and is reading the Birth Partner in preparation for my labor and delivery. Since I am hoping to have a natural birth, his support will be instrumental in getting me through the big day. I have also been soaking up all the advice the blogosphere has to offer. There are so many wonderful mom bloggers out there! We have just finished our childbirth and parenting classes and still have an infant CPR class and a labor consultation class with a masseuse doula coming up. So in theory we are prepared, but really, we have no idea what’s in store for us!

	For such little things,
babies need so much! This being an urban baby in a small apartment, I first
needed to figure out what was really essential and what I could leave off the
list. This step involved further research, as there is an overwhelming quantity
of baby products out there. Then came the purging portion, where I got rid of
things of ours that we simply did not need to have around (like that guitar I
have not played in over a decade). And once the baby stuff started arriving
(due in large part to wonderful and generous family and friends) came my
favorite part – organizing! All the toys and books are in bins. The clothes are
sorted by size and type. And the Tidy Tot diapers are put together and waiting
for baby in my dresser drawer.

	With 50 (give or take!)
days to go, I can’t stop thinking about what our baby will look like. I feel
him kicking and poking and turning and hiccupping inside, and on some level I
feel like I already know him. But I cannot wait until we both finally get to
see his tiny face and hold him in our arms. A (sleep-deprived!) adventure
awaits!

Adventures In Cloth Diapering - Part 2

Our Cloth Diapering journey began in January 2014 when our 4th
child was about 18 months. We were
scared but determined to give it a real go this time. Now I want to share some obstacles we ran
into and were able to overcome.

1:)The Poop:Why oh why does this seem so scary.Every time I mention that we cloth diaper to
someone, they are immediately concerned about how we manage to deal with the
dirty diapers. One word: Flushies! The first brand of cloth diapers we tried
offered disposable liners, which I purchased, but they would shift and move and
we would still end up with poop all over the diaper.Scraping just didn’t appeal to me and,
thankfully, Tidy Tots has designed a solution.Their Flushies attach to Velcro as well as get secured with the snaps so
there is no shifting.Problem solved.

2:)The Smell:The first brand we tried developed a funky
smell.While the diapers and liners
would come out of the wash smelling clean, within an hour of our son wearing
them, they would start to smell like urine.I would check him and he was still completely dry.Ick.I
was starting to get a little disgusted with cloth diapers because it was
embarrassing to have that smell lingering. Then I discovered Tidy Tots.Made
from hemp and anti-microbial, we no longer had smell issues.Another problem solved.

3:)The Laundry:Who needs more laundry?Seriously. As a mom to four children, additional laundry didn’t sound very
appealing.However, if I consider the
fact that I was doing extra clothing laundry from diaper leaks and blow-outs,
the one load of cloth diapers I do a day starts to sound appealing.Plus, I don’t have to give any mid-day baths
or struggle with clothing changes while running errands and I have a diaper
fail.While cloth diapers should be
changed every 2 to 4 hours and as needed to prevent any leaking issues, I have
found that I have less issues with cloth than disposables.Plus, if you think about it, disposables
should really be changed that often as well.No baby wants to sit in a wet diaper for half a day even if the
chemicals and products inside allow the diaper to contain it.So I will gladly take my one load of diapers
at the end of each day.Plus, there is
no folding and putting away.Each
morning, I re-stuff and stack them on the changing table and we are ready to go
for another day.

4:)The Price:Many people automatically think cloth diapers
are expensive.Yes, they do require an
investment up front to get started, but if everyone would figure out what they
spend on disposables, they would realize that it’s peanuts. We were spending $80 per month on “green
disposables”.My cloth diaper “stash” is
small so if we would stick to cloth for about TWO months, we would be money
ahead. Our first two children were in
diapers until they were almost three. Our third for a little over two years. Our fourth is currently in (cloth) diapers at just under two.I just cringe when I think of all the money
we wasted over those years on disposable diapers.Since I do a diaper load each night before
bed, I see no reason to purchase tons of diapers. To be safe, I feel like 10-12 would be a good
number for a toddler and would allow some breathing room.

I am so happy we finally tried cloth diapers.I love the fact that we are not adding
diapers to the landfills and I love the money we are saving. For anyone even considering the switch, I
highly encourage giving it a go.Set a
goal and don’t look back.I’ve even
heard of some people who cloth even part time to get the feel of it.There are no rules when it comes to cloth
diapering.Do what works for you!We jumped in 100% this time and it has truly
been a blessing.

the one load of cloth diapers I do a day starts to sound appealing.Plus, I don’t have to give any mid-day baths
or struggle with clothing changes while running errands and I have a diaper
fail.While cloth diapers should be
changed every 2 to 4 hours and as needed to prevent any leaking issues, I have
found that I have less issues with cloth than disposables.Plus, if you think about it, disposables
should really be changed that often as well.No baby wants to sit in a wet diaper for half a day even if the
chemicals and products inside allow the diaper to contain it.So I will gladly take my one load of diapers
at the end of each day.Plus, there is
no folding and putting away.Each
morning, I re-stuff and stack them on the changing table and we are ready to go
for another day.

	A Little About Me:

	My
name is Miranda and my husband and I have been married for ten years. We have four children, ranging in ages from
just turned 9 all the way down to 22 months, with another on the way.

	My Story:

	I don’t
consider myself to have been raised in a “green” family.Sure, we recycled aluminum cans, food cans,
and glass as well as picked up trash as we went for walks. One year, my parents even tried to have our
own garden. But that’s about it.

So when I was expecting our first child, cloth diapering was
nowhere on my radar. It was still not
even something I had even heard much about with our second. However, when our third child was a baby, I
started coming across blogs and Facebook pages that boasted all the benefits of
cloth.

<quote style="color:#6d6e70; font-weight:700; font-size:20px;">"he got a raw “chemical burn” looking spot on him. Game Over! I decided we needed to give cloth a real try"</quote>

I became intrigued. I casually mentioned something to my husband
and he was adamantly opposed. However, I
still decided to place a small order when our son was about a year old and I
saw a Cloth Diapering Store/Company advertising a sale. I ordered a diaper, couple of inserts, and
roll of liners. If you haven’t yet
guessed, this ended in complete and utter failure. I had no idea what I was doing.I had no idea that most companies require you
to “prep” diapers. To make the story
short, we made it through ONE diaper change. There was pee everywhere in puddles on the floor around him. Our sad try landed us back in disposables
until he potty trained at a little over two years old.

Next came baby number four. I had no desire to clean pee puddles so we stuck with disposables. This time, however, I had become more aware
and thought I was at least doing a little better by ordering “green”
disposables. Sure, it was extremely
expensive each month that my box got delivered but I had convinced myself that
this was the best way to go. Then the
company made some changes in ingredients when our son was about 17 months old
and he got a raw “chemical burn” looking spot on him. Game over. I decided we needed to give cloth a real try again.

It was now January 2014. New year, new leaf, and a new resolution that
I was determined to finally keep. Even
though my husband was still not on board, I purchased about eight cloth
diapers, inserts, and disposable liners. While the poop scared me, I was a determined mom on a mission. It is now four months later and I can
honestly say that I have loved cloth diapering. There have been challenges that I will share with you in my next post
but even my husband loves it. I hear him
encouraging others to give it a try and I am so proud of how far we have come
in overcoming our Cloth Diapering fears.

As Earth Day approaches and I read articles about conservation and making
"green" contributions to the world around us, I am reminded of a very inconvenient truth. Having kids is bad for the environment.

I have never met anyone more wasteful than my children. My son likes to frolic
in sprinklers for hours. He opens a juice box, almost immediately loses it, then
opens another. Both my son and daughter require 3 to 4 outfits a day which means
laundry, laundry, laundry. In the bathroom, my son likes to flush, reflush and
flush one more time "for good luck." My daughter goes through diapers almost as
frequently as she blinks. The dishwasher is always on, the refrigerator is
always open and the car is always on the road.

So I try to do little things here and there that will help the environment. Like
recycling my wine bottles and turning off all the lights in the house... so what
if the kids can't find me... I'm doing it for their future.

However, as wasteful and as bad as they are for the environment, kids are good
for one thing. The heart.

So crank up your sprinklers and pass out the juice boxes. It's time to celebrate
Earth Day!
